The above quote attributed to Michelangelo can easily be the mantra for someone with a multifaceted mindset (scanners). We seem to have a never ending stream of thoughts and ideas, concepts and plans jumping in and out of our waking thoughts. “Which ones am I going to be serious about?” ” Which ones revel the true me?” “Will I ever complete anything?”

The honest answers are, all of them, each one and sometimes. For people with the multifaceted mindsets you are serious about every thought that comes through your head, every concept has the potential to develop into something wonderful. You have know problem seeing the “Big” picture and seeing how you fit into it. As far as the “true you” goes, your ability to process things quickly leaves you hungry and wanting more. Because of this you may seem to float from job to job, or interest to interest but really you are a sponge, soaking up all there is to offer. Now come the hard one… completing things. You will complete things to the point of knowledge. Once you have learned what ever it is you were trying to learn you will move on. Whether you aware trying to learn a particular skill or trying out an idea to see if it works. Once you have gotten out of it whatever it was you needed, you are done. If you are task oriented person and has to complete something before going on to the next thing, well… you are probably not a scanner personality. If you are someone with a multifaceted mindset, you will more than likely not make a good manger, for you will be constantly distracted by your other thoughts and ideas. You would be better suited to be a trainer or teacher and innovator and entrepreneur. Once you have visualized and idea, developed it and seen it started you will probably loose interest and that’s okay, let others manage it if it is a long term idea. This will free you up to revisit this project whenever it becomes necessary and allow you to move on to the next thing. Having this sort of wonderful mind is not a flaw or showing lack of discipline but much like Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci it allows you to be the innovator that could possibly make someone life a little better. This blog is for people who have a “multifaceted mindset” (mine) or as Barbara Sher calls them in her book “Refuse to Choose“,”Scanners.” These are people who through no fault of their own, are genetically wired to pursue multiple interest. As a matter of fact, if you are not pursuing multiple interest or changing interest frequently, you tend to take root and become a stick. Not a tree, a stick. If you are not constantly acquiring or learning new information, you can’t bloom. People with a multifaceted mindset are often mislabeled as unfocused or indecisive. That fact of the matter is we just process information much more rapidly than others, our focus is very intense when we are in the process of creating a new facet.

I chose the term “multifaceted mindset” because the people with this gift are much like jewels. With each facet we are able to capture more of the light and in return our brilliance grows. Now we can only create new facets and increase in brilliance when we are being shaped in a way that is the most beneficial and unique for each jewel. In other words you will shine, when you do what you are meant to be doing; what you were created to be.

This site is to let you know that you are not alone and that there is nothing wrong with you. You are unique today in this world of “specialist,” your brilliance is not contained or limited by what society defines as normal. Let me leave you today with a little bit about my multifaceted mindset. These are in no particular order.

I am or have been: Husband, father, artist (pencil and charcoal, watercolors, acrylics) photographer, songwriter, written two children’s stories (anyone know any willing publishers?) chef, restaurateur, cooking instructor, specialty caterer, singer, guitar player, piano player, music teacher, tile and flooring installer, tiling instructor, blogger, youth pastor, speaker, conducted workshops on worship music in today’s church, certified s.c.u.b.a. diver, swimming instructor, competitive swimmer, triathlete, marathon runner, missions team leader to Africa, semi-professional magician (not primary source of income), studio singer, beer maker and journeyman. This list is in no way complete and constantly changing but that’s okay.
